NEW DELHI: Over 16 crore people will vote in this year’s assembly elections in five states – Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, Uttrakhand, Manipur and Goa – the Election Commission said while announcing the poll dates.

Here’s how it stacks up:-
a) Goa to go on polls on February 4
b) Punjab to face vote on February 4
c) Uttarakhand February 15
d) Manipur (2 phases) March 4 and 8
e) Uttar Pradesh (7 phases) 1st phase Feb 11, 2nd phase Feb 15, 3rd phase Feb 19

If BJP retrieved some momentum back in its favour in 2016 with a maiden assembly election win in Assam, the biggest question on the minds of its top brass was whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s demonetisation gamble will pay off in the new year in a series of assembly polls, especially in Uttar Pradesh.

BJP President Amit Shah will look back at the passing year with fondness as it presented him with some promising rewards and shored up his authority after back-to-back massive defeats in Delhi and Bihar in the preceding year had prompted leaders within the party, including veterans like L K Advani, to point fingers at him.

‘Evacuation not based on intel inputs’

Questions mount over the Punjab government’s decision to evacuate around eight lakh people along the Pakistan border, with intelligence sources telling The Hindu that it was not based on any security assessment from the central agencies.

BSF hasn’t ordered border evacuation

Addressing a press conference on Tuesday, BSF Director General K.K. Sharma said the force has not issued orders for vacating villages along the India-Pakistan International Border (IB) in Punjab, and said such directives may have been issued by the respective civil administrations.
